From December 2 to 15, government representatives from more than 190 nations gathered in Madrid, Spain for the 25th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, also known as COP25, to discuss and advance climate action. While negotiators were unable to agree to concrete plans to strengthen the implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement at the two-week-long conference, the EU committed to carbon neutrality by 2050 and 73 nations announced that they will submit an enhanced climate action plan. WANGO participated in the 2019 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which took place in Washington, D.C. from October 14 to 20. The event drew together around 13,000 participants from 180 countries to discuss a range of issues related to poverty reduction, international economic development and finance, and building human capital, and featured a Civil Society Policy Forum that was held over four days. In observance of Urban October 2019, the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS) held its 14th annual session from September 5 to 6 at the UN Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on the theme, "Sustainable Development of Cities and Human Settlements in the Digital Era." The second World Tolerance Summit was held from November 13 to 14, 2019 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. WANGO joined more than 3,200 participants for the conference, whose theme was “Tolerance in Multiculturalism: Achieving the Social, Economic and Humane Benefits of a Tolerant World" and focused on how education and knowledge-sharing can be a powerful tool to raise awareness on tolerance in diversity. With one-third of food produced for human consumption lost or wasted, and millions still going hungry, the UN's food-related agencies are spotlighting the issue. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has published its annual State of Food and Agriculture report which contains fresh estimates of the scale of the problem and suggests possible solutions, and in early October, the World Food Programme (WFP) launched the #StopTheWasteCampaign. Sixty-six countries have committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, the UN announced on September 23. These governments are joined by 10 regions, 102 cities, 93 businesses, and 12 investors. The UN estimates that the world needs to increase its current efforts five-fold to contain climate change to the levels dictated by science--a rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius by the year 2100 to avoid escalating climate damage. To meet the urgent need to address climate change and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is convening a Summit on September 23 to raise ambition and increase climate action. The UN Secretary-General is calling on all leaders to come to the Summit with concrete, realistic plans to enhance their nationally determined contributions by 2020, in line with reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent over the next decade, and to net zero emissions by 2050. At the G20 Summit held in Osaka, Japan from June 28 to 29, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed to the leaders from the largest and fastest-growing economies for stronger commitment to climate action. “All the analyses that can be made show the [climate] situation, in practical terms, is worse than what we could have forecasted, and the political will has been failing," he said, calling it “a paradox that needs to be addressed." He also highlighted that G20 nations represent 80 percent of climate change emissions and called for greater international financial and economic cooperation. (Read more...)

The Vatican brought together the leaders of South Sudan's government and its opposition for a two-day ecumenical retreat from April 10 to 11 to support peace and reconciliation in the nation, which is expected to set-up a unity government. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011, and two years later, in 2013, had devolved into a civil war that left at least 400,000 people dead and displaced millions. At the end of the retreat, Pope Francis kissed the feet of the leaders and urged them to "stay in peace."(Read more...)
